Odoo reordering rules or Lancaster Agentic: which should you use?
Last updated
Use Odoo's reordering rules when your Min and Max levels are tuned and you want orders created automatically inside Odoo; use Lancaster Agentic when you want each item's order sized from its own sales history without maintaining those levels. Odoo's rules are built in and also cover manufacturing; Lancaster Agentic is a purchasing agent in ChatGPT or Claude that creates Odoo purchase orders when you tell it to.
How do the two approaches differ?
Odoo's reordering rules react to levels you set; Lancaster Agentic works out the level from sales history each time you ask. Both count stock on hand and incoming supply, and both end in a purchase document in Odoo.
In Odoo, each rule holds a Min and a Max for a product at a location. When the forecasted quantity falls below the Min, the rule refills to the Max, rounded up to a pack Multiple if you set one. Odoo's forecast here is stock on hand plus known future moves, such as confirmed sales orders, timed with lead times through its just-in-time logic.
Lancaster Agentic reads three years of sales history, stock on hand, open purchase orders, vendors and lead times. For each item it forecasts demand, then sizes the order to cover the vendor lead time plus a safety stock measured in days, less what you already have and have on order.
Odoo's rules and Suggest are the simpler choice for steady, well-tuned items and for manufacturing; Lancaster Agentic fits buyers who want a per-item forecast and vendor-by-vendor purchase orders created from ChatGPT or Claude.
| Odoo reordering rules | Lancaster Agentic | |
|---|---|---|
| What sets the order level | A Min and Max you enter per product and location | A per-item forecast from 36 months of sales, plus lead time and safety-stock days |
| Demand it looks at | Stock on hand and known future demand, such as confirmed sales orders | Historical sales, with stock on hand and open purchase orders counted first |
| Items that sell now and then | Same Min and Max logic; a 0/0/1 rule can buy one unit per sales order | A method built for intermittent demand, with a reserve of at least one typical order |
| Sales-history suggestions | The Purchase app's Suggest option proposes quantities in an RFQ from past sales over a period you choose, less stock and incoming | Per-item method chosen automatically, with a method for intermittent demand |
| Seasonality | Not part of reordering rules; Suggest can look at the same period last year, and the Master Production Schedule plans against a forecast you adjust by hand | Optional same-season-last-year or three-year seasonal median methods; default is flat |
| What it creates | RFQs with the Buy route, manufacturing orders with the Manufacture route | Confirmed purchase orders only (not RFQs), created when you tell it to in ChatGPT or Claude |
| When it runs | Auto rules on the daily scheduler or a confirmed sales order; manual rules from the Replenishment report | When you ask in ChatGPT or Claude, scoped to a vendor, warehouse, product group or item |
| Where you work | Inside Odoo | In ChatGPT or Claude, with orders saved in Odoo |
| Status with Odoo | Built into Odoo Inventory | Connection built and tested against Odoo test systems; we connect it to yours with you during setup |
When should you choose Odoo's reordering rules instead?
Choose Odoo's rules when they already fit how you buy. They are built in, they run without anyone asking, and they reach parts of Odoo that Lancaster Agentic does not.
- You manufacture. Rules with the Manufacture route create manufacturing orders. Lancaster Agentic only drafts purchase orders.
- Your demand is steady and your levels are tuned. If Min and Max already match how items sell, an Auto rule keeps them stocked with no extra step.
- You want hands-off ordering. Auto rules create RFQs on the daily scheduler. Lancaster Agentic works when someone asks and creates an order only when told to.
- You buy to order. A 0/0/1 rule buys one unit each time a sales order needs it.
- You resupply between warehouses. Odoo's routes and the Replenishment report can pull stock from another warehouse.
- You want quick suggestions inside a purchase order. Odoo's Suggest option fills an RFQ with quantities from recent or last year's sales, with no outside tool.
- You want one system. Rules need nothing beyond Odoo, no demo and no setup with an outside team.
When does Lancaster Agentic fit better?
Lancaster Agentic fits when keeping Min and Max right is the real work. It sizes each order from the item's own sales, so a slowing item buys less and a growing one buys more, without anyone editing a rule.
- Many items, few buyers. No stored levels to keep current across hundreds of products.
- Uneven sellers. Items that sell only some months get a method built for that pattern.
- Vendor-by-vendor buying. Ask for one vendor's reorder, review it, and have it create one purchase order.
Can you use both?
Yes. Lancaster Agentic reads your Odoo data and does not need your rules turned off. One sensible split is Auto rules for steady items and manufactured goods, and Lancaster Agentic for the weekly purchase review.
If both cover the same item, check open RFQs before you tell Lancaster Agentic to create the order, so you do not order twice; Lancaster Agentic counts confirmed purchase orders as incoming, not open RFQs. Nothing goes to a vendor until someone on your team sends it. To tune Odoo's side, see how to set reorder points in Odoo; for how Lancaster Agentic connects, see Lancaster Agentic for Odoo.
Frequently asked questions
Does Odoo forecast demand from sales history for reordering rules?
Odoo's reordering rule documentation describes a forecast built from stock on hand and future demand, such as confirmed sales orders, with Min and Max values you set. For longer-term planning, the Master Production Schedule lets you plan against a demand forecast you adjust by hand. Separately, the Purchase app's Suggest option proposes order quantities from past sales when you build an RFQ.
Can Lancaster Agentic create manufacturing orders in Odoo?
No. Lancaster Agentic drafts purchase orders only. Use Odoo's reordering rules with the Manufacture route for manufactured items.
Does Lancaster Agentic work with Odoo in Slack?
Not today. Slack works with EBMS only. Odoo runs through Lancaster Agentic in ChatGPT or Claude, which we set up with you after a call.
Is Lancaster Agentic ready to connect to my Odoo?
The connection is built and tested against Odoo test systems, where answers matched a reference key and a test purchase order was created and deleted. We connect it to your Odoo with you during setup.
